Senior members of The RU Group team take part in a range of events to help enterprising school students across our region improve their financial and business knowledge.
Throughout the current academic year, we are proud to be supporting Young Enterprise, the UK’s largest enterprise education charity, to mentor and coach secondary school students within the region, helping them to learn about business and the world of work. Through participation in the Young Enterprise Company Programme, it is hoped that the students will leave school with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to succeed in work and life.
We believe that being better informed enables better decision making and at The RU Group we are firmly committed to the personal and professional development of all staff which is why we have achieved Chartered Status three years in a row. This ethos is not one that should be confined to the walls of The RU Group and we decided to work with Young Enterprise to help aspirational young people improve their financial and business knowledge. These are key skills which will help them not only in their academic careers but throughout their lives.
Over recent weeks, 24 members of staff at The RU Group have been involved in, or will soon be, supporting Young Enterprise across a range of activities, from delivering Employee Masterclasses to mentoring students. This includes all members of our Senior Leadership Team.
Director Helen has been working with Bluecoat School, Nottingham on the scheme’s Company Programme. This has involved attending weekly meetings at the school with a specific team of students, providing guidance and input into their sales strategy, finances, final report and presentation techniques. Helen will also be helping to deliver the Employability Masterclass and Learn to Earn programmes at the Bluecoat Academy over the next couple of months. She was also a judge at one of the regional finals!
Compliance Manager Darren has been liaising with students from Grantham College to advise them on their business – The Little Letter Shop. Like Helen, Darren provided guidance and support across the business spectrum. He also tried hard to drum up business on their behalf by sharing their catalogue of goodies with the rest of The RU Group!
Ian, Head of Advice, helped to judge at the Lincolnshire County Final at Bishop Grosseteste University on 27th March. He is also due to judge at the Nottinghamshire County Final in Nottingham on 8th May and the Regional Final on 4th June.
Head of Client Services, Marie, has been supporting Holgate Sixth Form in Hucknall. Drawing on her wealth of experience gained at some of the UK’s leading finance companies, including Capital One and The Royal Bank Of Scotland, Marie has been coaching students on interview techniques and advising them on how to improve their CVs and personal statements. Marie also worked with the sixth form students on a business challenge where pupils designed Valentine’s Day gifts and then sold their products at the Four Seasons Shopping Centre in Mansfield as part of a friendly competition with other schools.
In March, Marie was joined by our Financial Planning Manager Nick Onslow at the Sherwood Area Young Enterprise Showcase Event. Marie was on hand to support and mentor the team from The Holgate Academy and Nick was a guest speaker. This event saw students from schools across the Sherwood area of Nottingham being interviewed about the ‘Company Reports’ they had produced. The teams also delivered a presentation about their reports to the panel of judges.
In addition to the Young Enterprise’s Company Programmes, which the Senior Leadership team help with, all members of staff are offered the opportunity to volunteer for any of the scheme’s Day Programmes. This has proved so popular that there is now a waiting list of staff wishing to become involved!
Our partnership with Young Enterprise is ongoing and we look forward to keeping you updated on other projects over coming months.
